The Information Suppression Problem
In large organizations, information about project status, product quality, and strategic risks often gets filtered as it travels up the hierarchy. Bad news is softened. Timelines are presented optimistically. Risks are downplayed to avoid blame. By the time senior leadership makes decisions, the information they are working with has been systematically distorted.
Internal prediction markets offer a mechanism to bypass this distortion. If employees can anonymously trade on contracts like "Will Project X ship by Q3?" or "Will Product Y achieve 100K users in its first year?", the market price aggregates their collective knowledge without the filtering that hierarchical reporting introduces.
Historical Precedents
Google, Intel, Microsoft, and other technology companies have experimented with internal prediction markets. Google's internal market reportedly predicted launch dates more accurately than official project timelines. The markets work because employees have diverse, ground-level knowledge about what is actually happening in their projects, and the market mechanism incentivizes honest expression of that knowledge.
Why Adoption Has Been Slow
Despite promising results, corporate prediction markets have not been widely adopted. Political concerns (managers do not want a market that publicly signals their project is behind schedule) and cultural resistance (the idea of "betting" on company outcomes feels uncomfortable) have limited uptake. Legal considerations around employee gambling also constrain implementation in some jurisdictions.
The External Equivalent
Even without internal markets, public prediction markets on corporate events (earnings beats, product launches, regulatory approvals) provide external information that corporate decision-makers can monitor. A prediction market contract on whether a competitor will launch a product by a certain date provides a continuously-updated probability estimate that supplements internal competitive intelligence.
