Outright Bets
The simplest prediction market position is an outright bet: buy YES on "Will Event X happen by Date Y?" If the event happens, you collect $1 per contract. If not, you lose your stake. The risk/reward is straightforward and the analysis focuses on a single probability estimate.
Calendar Spreads
Some prediction market platforms offer contracts on the same event with different resolution dates. "Will X happen by March?" and "Will X happen by June?" might both be available. If you believe X will happen but not until April or May, you could sell the March contract (collecting the premium since you believe it will expire worthless) and buy the June contract (which you believe will pay out).
This calendar spread position profits if X happens between March and June. It loses if X happens before March (your short March position loses) or if X does not happen at all (your long June position expires worthless). The risk profile is different from a simple outright bet because you are expressing a view on timing, not just on whether the event will occur.
Conditional Positions
Another advanced approach involves related contracts. If you believe Event A will cause Event B, you can buy contracts on B while selling contracts on A, creating a position that profits from the conditional relationship. For example, if you believe a rate cut will cause a specific economic indicator to improve, you might buy the indicator contract and sell the rate cut contract, profiting if the rate cut occurs and the indicator responds as you expect.
When to Use Advanced Structures
Outright bets are appropriate when you have a clear view on a binary outcome and want maximum simplicity. Calendar spreads are appropriate when your view is about timing. Conditional positions are appropriate when your analytical edge is about the relationship between events rather than the events themselves. Each structure matches a different type of analytical insight, and choosing the right structure ensures your position accurately reflects your view.
