Well folks, it’s officially the year 2012. And even though the Mayans have put a stigma on 2012 with all their “end of the world” mumbo jumbo, I’m very excited about the upcoming year.
.
This is the time for new-year’s resolutions. I was going to put down “stop procrastinating” on my list, but I never got around to creating it.
.
If you too have yet to create your list of new-year’s resolution’s, here are a few Excel resolutions you can adopt for 2012.
- Stop emailing workbooks called Book1.xls
- Stop using Merge and Center
- Stop hiding cell content using White font
- Start making your workbooks Print-ready, so we don’t print 25 blank pages when we print it
- Stop printing Excel eye charts with 8 pitch font
Feel free to add your own. Happy New Year!

(regarding #1)
Fine. For 2012, I’ll email workbooks called Book1.xlsx
Just kidding, of course. Hope you have a great 2012!
Why not use merge and center? What if you have a header that should be centered above two or more subheaders?
fyi.. something seems to be wrong with the timestamp of the post. It is currently January 3, 2012 7:00 AM central time when I post. The timestamp says it is 4 PM.
David,
Merge and Center can be achieved by using Merge Across instead. DataPig probably has his own reasons for recommending this, but for me it makes it easier to format and manipulate cells – have you ever gotten the message from Excel saying it can’t complete the function because cells are merged? If you merge across instead, you see the same visual effect but have less of a headache when trying to work with the cells.
Just my .02
Merge across is equally bad. You should use Center Across Selection.
(Format cells dialog > Alignment tab > Horizontal > Center Across Selection)
It provides the same visual effect without merging the cells. It’s a darn shame that they (MS) didn’t make this feature more accessible.
Ohhh yeesss, totaly agree with you Ruve1K.
and I recoginze I hide content whit blank fonts….and of course I forgot it…what a shame.
Great thanks a lot for this and if Mayans Calender proves right than there is no need to made new resolution anymore.
Anyway thanks a lot for this.
Hey, thanks for all the information that you share about access, those are exellent videos tutorials……thanks and bless you the Lord,
