Adding Pictures to Your Buttons

Welcome back from the long holiday season. OK…who forgot their passwords after two weeks of being gone? I bet a few of you had to call the help desk for a password reset.

Anyway, the first post of the new year is something light; how to add pictures to your buttons in Excel.

Adding Pictures to Form Control Buttons

Form Control buttons are the most commonly used buttons. They’re easy to use, and you can assign macros to them. Unfortunately, there is no way to add actual pictures to them.

What you can do, however, is type in them. Not only that, but you can change the font style and size.

In this screenshot, I’ve typed the plus sign (+) and changed the font to Webdings. The other button has the Wingdings font. The idea is to find the font and characters that give you the most appropriate picture for your button.

You won’t win any prizes for GUI design with this trick, but it’ll get you pictures.

Adding Pictures to ActiveX Buttons

ActiveX buttons are typically not used on spreadsheets. They’re a bit trickier to configure and they come with a lot of overhead. But they do offer the option of adding pictures to them.

If you’re using an ActiveX button, you can easily add a picture by right-clicking and selecting Properties.

This will open the Properties window. Here, you would simply find the Picture property and choose the picture you want.

Using an Actual Picture

Of course, you can skip the buttons all together and just use an actual picture. In this screenshot, I’ve added a picture and formatted it to get that beveled look.  Now I can just right-click the picture and assign a macro.

There you go.  Now go forth and create ugly GUIs everywhere.
